Opening Theory: What to Do in the First 10 Moves

Because of Timuria's large 11×10 board, classical chess opening reflexes ("grab the center," "develop knights early") don't translate directly. Pieces take more moves to reach each other, which turns the opening into a game of patience and planning.

1. Develop Your Leaping Pieces Early

The Knight, Camel, Elephant, and Giraffe can move without waiting on other pieces. Getting at least two of these active in the first few moves is worth far more than a slow, methodical development — because these pieces can threaten things even in cramped positions.

2. Factor the Citadel In From the Start

In classical chess, the early game is built around the center and King safety alone. Timuria adds a third dimension: the opposing King's escape route to the citadel. As an early plan, positioning a piece that controls that route pays off in the long run.

3. Use the Vizier and General Defensively

Because the Vizier and General only move 1 square (don't confuse them with the powerful classical Queen), they play a defensive, not offensive, role early on. Keeping them right next to your King as a shield is the most efficient way to use them.

4. Build Pawn Chains Carefully

With 11 different pawn types, you need to think about which pawn "unlocks" which major piece when advanced. Pushing your Camel Pawn early, for instance, can widen your Camel's range but might also leave the Camel behind it undefended.

5. Don't Spend the King Swap Early

The King Swap, usable only once per game, is an "emergency" card. Using it when there's no real threat in the opening means having nothing left when you genuinely need it in the middle- or endgame.

General Rule: Be Patient

The large board makes aggressive early attacks riskier than in classical chess — by the time your pieces reach the opponent, your own defense may be left exposed. In the first 10 moves your goal shouldn't be attacking, but activating all your leaping pieces and getting your King safe.
