11 Different Pawns: A Promotion Rules Guide

In classical chess every pawn is identical and can promote into whichever piece you choose upon reaching the last rank. Timuria works completely differently: every major piece has its own dedicated pawn, and a pawn can only promote into the specific piece it's tied to.

How Does Promotion Work?

For example, a Camel Pawn reaching the last rank automatically promotes into a Camel — it can never become anything else. This removes the "which piece do I promote to" decision from classical chess, but replaces it with a new question: which pawn should I prioritize advancing?

Special Case: The King's Pawn

The most unusual exception is the King's Pawn. When it reaches the last rank, it doesn't promote into the King (since the King is unique and "royal") — instead it becomes a special piece called the Prince. The Prince moves like a King, 1 square in any direction, but isn't royal, meaning losing it doesn't end the game.

Pawn Awareness on Defense

Tracking which of your opponent's pawns are close to promotion lets you see incoming threats before they materialize. If a Camel or Elephant pawn is approaching the last rank, closing off that file early is a smart defensive plan.
